I always develop my films myself, and therefore, I make sure never to wind the film rolls all the way back into the canister. That way, I can reuse the film holders and wind fresh film into them. Now and then, I forget to mark the film canister as exposed, and the problem then is that I'm not always sure whether the film has been exposed or not, due to the small strip of film sticking out of the canister.
Sometimes, I therefore end up reinserting an already exposed film into my camera, resulting in double-exposed films. This represents a process that empowers the film’s emulsion to compose the outcome. Is the film ruined, or have I opened a door to new expressive realms? In any case, I have lost all thematic, compositional, and expressive control… and perhaps that’s not so bad after all.
