MUSIKKENS HUS

Musikkens Hus (The House of Music) in Aalborg opened in 2014 as a shared home for the Aalborg Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Academy of Music, and Aalborg University’s music programmes. Designed by the Austrian firm Coop Himmelb(l)au, the building is a study in concrete and aluminium. I visited it in June 2025, serving as an external examiner at a diploma exam.

By chance, I had a roll of Fomapan 400 in my half-format Canon Demi C. And now and then, luck strikes: film and subject seem made for each other. The panchromatically sensitized Czech Republic Fomapan carries the very texture of concrete in its emulsion. Developed in Rodinal 1:50, the gentle rawness of the concrete and the explosion of grey tones come alive through the chunky grain of the Fomapan. These hushed moods in worlds of grey — they are among the things I love most.
